Mathématicien américain né le 30 avril 1916, il entre à 22 ans au MIT et en 1941 au Bell Laboratories où il écrit en 1949 avec le mathématicien Warren Weaver, le texte fondateur de la théorie de l'information : The Mathematical Theory of Communication.
